WORSHIP: DELIGHTING IN THE LORD
One scripture passage that is popular and often memorized is
Psalm 37:4: "Delight yourself in the Lord; And He will give you
the desires of your heart." Psalm 37 is not a prayer or a praise,
but an encouragement:
We are taught...
1. Not to fret (v 1)
2. To trust the Lord (v 3)
3. To do good (v 3)
4. To be faithful (v 3)
5. To delight in the Lord (v 4)
6. To commit our way to the Lord (v 5)
7. To rest in the Lord (v 7)
8. To give up being angry (v 8)
Sounds like work, doesn't it? Yet, the underlying message
actually is this: By focusing on the truth that God is in control,
we easily live free from the things that can weigh a person down.
Since God is so powerful and so great, his redeemed and beloved
children have no reason to struggle with anything. All matters of
life are God's business. He cares for his own with such delicate
intimacy! He not only knows us but he also cares for us as
It may not make sense to give up anger, to be faithful, to do
good, or to trust God in your situation, but these are natural
responses by those who embrace who God is.
When we can rest in the greatness of God and, with a smile of
calm assurance, see how big God is, we delight in him. Watch a
child as he fully trusts in his parent to hold him and to care for
him. All he does is cry out and reach for his mom or dad and all
is well. Children believe their parents can do anything. They can
solve the problem. They can comfort them.
Our Heavenly Father is also able. His perfect love, perfect
knowledge, and perfect wisdom qualify him to deal with any and
It is those who look to God in the midst of trouble that are truly
delighting in him. What greater worship can anyone bring to God
than that of gazing upon the wonder of who he is and reaching for
him, no matter what happens, good or bad?
Psalm 37 ends with these powerful words. "The salvation of the
righteous is from the Lord; He is their strength in time of trouble.
The Lord helps them and delivers them; He delivers them from
the wicked and saves them because they take refuge in Him."
Worship of Almighty God is lived out by people who look at the
wonder of their Abba Father and delight in him.
